Eco-town protest grows

PROTESTERS campaigning against a proposed eco-town have been out on the streets this week drumming up support.

More than 15,000 leaflets and 12,000 posters have been distributed throughout South Cambridgeshire by residents and councillors alike to help raise awareness of the Hanley Grange eco-town plans.

If built, the town would consist of more than 8,000 homes just south of Sawston. The proposed site is on a Government shortlist of 15 proposed eco-towns, to be whittled down to 10.

Public consultation on the sites ends on Monday, June 30.

Cllr Julia Redfern, an Uttlesford district councillor and member of the Stop Hanley Grange Action Group, said: "This is just the beginning. A huge amount of work has been going on behind the scenes to put everything in place and now is the time for action.

"The response we are getting is tremendous. The posters are going like hot cakes. Thousands of people are signing the petition."

The A505 has also been targeted, with more than 100 road signs put up by the group.

Cambridgeshire county councillor Tim Stone said: "This is absolutely not about nimbyism. We all welcome and embrace the 17,000 affordable homes being built in southern Cambridgeshire in the coming years.

"This so-called eco-town is unnecessary and threatens the completion of these crucial developments."

Councillors will be outside the Guildhall in Cambridge today from 10am-noon, to collect signatures for their petition against the eco-town and to hand out leaflets.
