Hanley Grange, coupled with the planned second runway at Stansted and another planned new town at Elsenham in Uttlesford, would render the whole area between Bishop's Stortford and Cambridge unrecognisable. It would create a nightmarish vision of our familiar towns and villages along the M11 north of Bishop's Stortford, such as Newport, Saffron Walden, Great Chesterford, Whittlesford, and Shelford being transformed into urban conurbations having more in common with Hounslow, Slough and Reading, with their endless business parks, warehouses and concrete sprawl straddled along the M4 corridor west of Heathrow Airport.

Biotech companies are threatening to quit Cambridge and move overseas if a proposed 927 acre eco-town goes ahead. The findings of a new survey - published by Life Sciences consultancy, Cambridge Healthcare & Biotech - are starkly at odds with claims from the promoters of the proposed development. The perceived needs of the Cambridge technology and biotech clusters have featured prominently in the promotional material for the Hanley Grange development.
