Eco-town project likely to go to High Court PDF Print E-mail

The future of Gordon Brown's eco-towns project is in jeopardy tonight after a judge ruled the whole programme would have to be brought before the High Court.

 

The Honorable Mr Justice Collins said permission should be granted for a judicial review. The ruling means the Government is likely to go before the High Court by the end of the year.

Tesco's decision 'is good for democracy' PDF Print E-mail
Andrew Lansley, MP for South Cambridgeshire, said: "Jim Paice and I went to see Sir Terry Leahy, chief executive of Tesco. We are pleased he asked his senior people to meet our colleagues. He was keen to ensure Tesco listened to the voice of the people. This is a tremendous outcome for our campaign."

Lawrence Wragg, Cambridgeshire spokesman for the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE), said eco-town proposals must be "handled by the proper planning system".

He said: "It's ironic that a supermarket should show the Government the best way of handling these proposals."

Tesco deals blow to eco-towns with exit from scheme PDF Print E-mail

Ministers recently delayed the publication of the shortlist of "up to 10" eco-towns from October to early next year, saying more time was needed to consider the submissions.

 

Yesterday's announcement means the list of 16 applicants announced in April is down to 12.

Blow for Labour's eco-town scheme as Tesco abandons plans PDF Print E-mail

Local councillor Julie Redfern, chairman of Stop Hanley Grange, said: "We are delighted that Tesco has seen sense and this is a victory for local democracy.

 

'Although Tesco now talks about the possibility of going through the proper planning channels, let's not forget that a proposal for a new town at Hinxton was made a few years ago and never made it through the planning process because the location is completely inappropriate.'
